THE TOUCH

As i was walking down the canal, i noticed leaves of wild plants on the bank of the canal had started wilting, as the soil around was dry....Water of the canal was unable to touch the surrounding area due to the heavy embankment...Gallons of water was flowing through the fixed course of the canal without touching the dry cracked land on the sides.Direct touch between the roots and water through soil is mandatory for the life and growth of the plants....we all know that.........the touch for life........for physical existence.

Last Monday i visited an ailing relative, a very old, fragile woman, not feeling well for quite some years now, completely exhausted with frequent admissions to the hospital, administration of intravenous pricks, on an ever increasing dosage of medicines.....increasing with every subsequent stay at the hospital.Today again she was in pain, unable to breath normal. Her condition could simply be described in one or two words....Extreme exhaustion .....at all parameters of life.

The moment i touched her hand to assure her, she tightly clasped my hand in between her skinny and cold hands  and informed me that she was not feeling good and asking me what she should do now.I failed to respond to her query. As the time passed she smiled, started inquiring about rest of the family. Probably getting some warmth from the touch....some relief. She held my hand till the moment i remained with her. Her attendant told me that throughout the night she had been holding her hand also in the same fashion. She feels better this way.

So the touch that she was feeling with her heart, her emotions, was making the difference....a warm touch...not on physical ground only, but also the warmth of  the heart was at play..... The two way communication between the patient and the attendant was at play......... touch from a caring person was helping her feel better, probably momentarily only.......the touch for well being..... for mental peace.

A flash of thought came to my mind,  what if we lose the essence of this touch while sincerely performing our religious rites...what if we fail to practically imply in day to day living whatever we read in our religious books daily.....What if we are unable to feel the touch ....fail to touch the crux.....the soul remains untouched.....the real essence for the spiritual up-lift......................
